· Koi are domesticated common carp, bred for color in Japan since the early 1800s.
· A well-cared-for koi can live 25–35 years; one famous koi named Hanako reportedly lived 226 years.
· Koi recognize the people who feed them and will gather at the surface when they approach.
· They have no stomach, so they graze continuously and eat almost anything — algae, insects, even watermelon.
· Koi keep growing their whole lives and can reach over 3 feet (90 cm) long.
· Their colors and patterns have names: kohaku (red-and-white), showa, and the metallic ogon are among the most prized.
